Book of Ancestors - Mixed Media Collage Workshop
Wednesday, October 8, 2025 / 5-7pm at the Holmes Art Cellar (in the Historic Holmes Theatre, 806 Summit Ave. Detroit Lakes, MN)
This October, step into the season of remembrance and creativity with a collage workshop inspired by the Book of Ancestors* and the traditions of Día de los Muertos.
Carmen will help you explore basic collage techniques while creating layered works of art that honor those who came before us. Using paint, paper, glue, vintage images, and found materials, you’ll learn how to cut, arrange, and assemble pieces into meaningful compositions that reflect both personal stories and universal themes of connection across generations.
You’ll will leave with a finished collage that feels like a page torn from your own “book of ancestors,” a keepsake to display or add to an altar of remembrance during Día de los Muertos.
• No prior experience necessary — just curiosity and a willingness to experiment.
• Bring photocopies of your own family photographs, letters, or small mementos that can be used to create your one-of-a-kind collage.
• Canvas and remaining supplies are included.
• This might get messy, so please dress accordingly.

Class Fee $55 / Ages 16+ / Class size limited.
*“Book of Ancestors” by Claire Goodchild will be referenced during class. It is NOT necessary for you to purchase or read the book prior to class. But if you’re curious – it is available at Bluebird Books in Detroit Lakes, MN or Amazon.com.

Workshop Details:

- All supplies are included.
- Bring photocopies of any personal images you would like to include.

- Workshops typically take place in Perham or Detroit Lakes, Minnesota, United States. However…feel free to contact me if you have a different location in mind!
