Mini Tarot Deck

I’ve often thought that creating my own tarot deck would be a meaningful artsy project. It could be an experiment in blending family history, nature, and light-hearted mysticism in a new way. And so, I did just that.

A full tarot deck contains 78 cards. My mini deck includes only the Major Arcana. The 22 cards of the Major Arcana represent life’s great journey and are numbered 00 through 21 – beginning with The Fool (00) and ending with The World (21).

My interpretations draw inspiration from the iconic Rider–Waite® tarot deck. The inspiration and color palette for the cards came from my “Death is a Doorway” collage and its smaller companion “Wheel of the Year.” Each card pairs a vintage family photo with a favorite animal (or “familiar”) native to my home state of Minnesota.

Instead of my usual “analog” collage process, I created this mini tarot deck digitally, working on my laptop with design software instead of paint, paper, and other materials. While I missed the feel of physical art supplies, the digital format is more forgiving and revisions are much easier to manage.

This artsy project may (or may not) have reached its end as the price of a printed tarot deck is quite high. Thank you for following along with my artsy experiment with tarot cards. I’ll let you know if I pick it back up again.
